FRIDAY MARCH 8, 1985 – SUNDAY MARCH 31, 1985

Sculpted Soviets is Russian-born artist Leonid Sokov's second solo exhibition at Storefront. Using political symbolism such as the bear and the eagle, or busts of former Soviet leaders, Sokov's work was a continuation of the early 20th-century Russian avant-garde artistic tradition. Whereas his predecessors aimed to celebrate Russia's political identity and military prowess, Sokov’s roughly carved sculptures reinterpreted the heroic myth dear to the Russian elites.
